Household Tips – Mildew Removal

Posted by

It’s time to put down the air freshener because that mildew smell isn’t going away on its own and temporarily masking the problem really isn’t the solution you desire. However, with a few common household items, you can eliminate that unpleasant odor once and for all.

What you will need:

  • Spray bottle
  • Baking Soda
  • Vinegar
  • Vacuum Cleaner or Broom
  • Sponge
  • Old Rags or Washcloth

First: vacuum the carpeted area in a thorough manner. Target the areas that have been afflicted by the smell and are giving off the strongest odor. You want to ensure the area is as dust-free as possible. If you don’t have a vacuum cleaner handy, sweeping the area with a broom will also work although it won’t be as effective.

Second: you will want to apply your homemade mildew remover. This is easy to make and is very effective. Take a clean and empty spray bottle. Combine 1 cup of vinegar and 2 cups of warm water in the bottle. Once ready, spray the areas that are giving off the mildew smell. After spraying, let the solution sit for about 5 minutes.

Do not pour the solution onto the carpet. Adding too much moisture to the carpet can result in increasing your mildew problem, rather than solving it.

After letting the solution sit for 5 minutes, forcefully scrub the carpet to work the mildew remover into it.

Third: once the affected areas have been scrubbed down, you will need to pour some baking soda over said areas. Sprinkle the carpet with baking soda and then give it time to dry. Once it is dry, vacuum any remaining baking soda.

Following these steps is a relatively quick and easy way to get rid of that mildew smell with some items that you might have lying around the house.
